What Season Should You Get Married: Virginia is for Lovers

Introduction

You’ve seen it on bumper stickers and heard it in ads, “Virginia is for LOVERS,” but what exactly does that mean? Well, Virginia has something for everyone! Wine lovers, hiking lovers, kayak lovers, history lovers, artisan lovers, foodie lovers, and of course lovers tying the knot! No matter your style or personality, Virginia is for you.

Choosing the perfect season for your wedding can set the tone for your entire celebration, and in Virginia, the options are as diverse as the state’s stunning landscapes. Whether you're enchanted by the vibrant colors of autumn or the crisp elegance of winter, southern Virginia’s scenic beauty, including the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains, offers a backdrop that will make your day unforgettable. The state’s accessible interstates, like I-81 and I-64, connect you to charming towns such as Lexington and Buena Vista, as well as the picturesque settings of historical Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute. With so many wonderful choices, let’s explore how each season can bring a unique charm to your Virginia wedding.

Spring: A Symphony of Blooms

Spring in Virginia is nothing short of magical. With the gorgeous cherry blossom trees blossoming, Imagine exchanging vows surrounded by vibrant blooms and lush greenery. The easy-going temperates of this season are perfect for outdoor ceremonies, with temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to mid-70s. The Blue Ridge Mountains come alive with a kaleidoscope of colors, making it a prime time for couples who love nature and want to infuse their wedding with fresh, floral beauty. There are so many local venues to choose from, it’s just a matter of finding the one that speaks to your heart and has your date available! With blooming cherry blossoms and dogwoods, your wedding photos will be absolutely enchanting.

Summer: Warmth and Romance

For those who revel in sunshine and warmth, summer is the season to shine. From June through August, Virginia offers sunny skies and warm temperatures perfect for a summer soirée. Imagine a chic, outdoor wedding with the beautiful valleys and waterways as your backdrop, bathed in golden sunlight. Summer evenings in Virginia can be delightfully temperate, making them ideal for an evening reception under the stars. Venues like the picturesque vineyards or the charming waterfront locations in Rockbridge County are all popular choices. With the abundance of natural light and the lush landscape, your wedding will exude warmth and romance.

Fall: A Tapestry of Colors

If you’re dreaming of a wedding adorned with rich, autumnal hues, fall in Virginia is a dream come true. I get overly excited when a couple tells me they’re fall date as my husband and I got married in Lexington in the fall! We used the Blue Ridge Mountains as a canvas of vibrant reds, oranges, and golds, providing a spectacular setting for our special day. The crisp air and mild temperatures, generally ranging from the mid-40s to mid-60s, create a cozy atmosphere perfect for a romantic celebration. You can have outdoor and indoor accommodations, depending on your wedding dreams. Imagine a rustic barn wedding with a backdrop of fall foliage or an elegant affair in a historic inn surrounded by autumn’s splendor. Popular venues that have the picturesque fall vibes in my area are New Field Farm at Timber Ridge in Lexington, Balcony Downs Venue & Retreat in Buena Vista, and Whistle Hollow Farm in Fairfield. The beauty of fall in Virginia is unmatched, making it a favorite for those seeking a picturesque and intimate wedding experience.

Winter: Elegant and Cozy

Winter weddings in Virginia offer a unique charm, especially if you’re drawn to a cozy, elegant atmosphere. With temperatures ranging from the low 30s to mid-40s, winter can be a magical time to get married, especially with the landscape draped in a delicate layer of snow. Think of a warm, inviting indoor ceremony with a roaring fireplace and twinkling lights. The rates for this timeline are often lower than your summer events, helping out those who want maybe a Christmas or New Year wedding to celebrate with close family and friends. The quiet beauty of a winter landscape offers a serene and romantic backdrop, ensuring that your wedding is both elegant and unforgettable.
