As a professional wedding planner, one of the most crucial aspects of my job is ensuring that every detail of the big day unfolds seamlessly. From venue selection to table decor and arrangements, each decision contributes to crafting a memorable experience for the couple, their families, and their guests. Among these decisions, perhaps one of the most crucial is choosing the best fit for a cinematographer to capture the elegance and joy of the wedding day.
Recently, I had the pleasure of working alongside a very talented cinematographer, Henry Saint-Jean. Henry started this journey in 2006. He is a professional cinematographer & content creator and the proud owner of Piximpress. Henry was kind enough to do a virtual interview with me to discuss his approach to documenting weddings. Our conversation shed light on the artistry and expertise that goes into creating stunning wedding films and clips.
Here’s the insight Henry (words in gold) gave as a professional cinematographer:
Background and Inspiration:
What inspired you to become a wedding cinematographer?
What inspired me to become a wedding cinematographer is a blend of my visual creativity and my passion for great movies that evoke deep emotions. Since childhood, I've loved drawing imaginative scenes and recreating movie moments with toys. Films with compelling storylines, like 'Titanic,' have inspired me to pursue cinematography, aiming to film with artistic intention and evoke emotions in viewers.
How long have you been capturing weddings, and what drew you to this specialization?
I've been capturing weddings since 2006. I initially entered the wedding industry as a DJ, then transitioned to photography, and ultimately discovered my passion for cinematography. What drew me to this specialization was the scarcity of wedding cinematographers, distinct from videographers. While some videographers professionally recorded events, there were not enough who could craft storytelling-style wedding films with artistic visuals.
Style and Approach:
How would you describe your photography/artistic style?
My wedding film style seamlessly blends authentic moments into a narrative that chronicles the wedding day, incorporating warm, timeless color tones that evoke a romantic feeling. This approach creates wedding films that resemble mini love story movies, capturing genuine emotions and allowing couples to relive their wedding day as if they were there all over again.
Would you share three or more pieces of your work to share with the world, along with your credentials and socials to showcase?
Of course!

Awards and recognition: TheKnot Best Vendors 2019 - 2024 and hall of fame, Weddingwire Couple’s Choice Awards 2019-2024, Best of Zola 2024

Services and Packages:
What is included in your wedding video/cinematography packages?
I offer various customizable packages, all of which include a highlight film. Each package comes with multi-camera coverage, professional audio recording, drone footage, and a premium viewing experience akin to Netflix. Some packages also include a full documentary option, covering the entire ceremony and reception events such as the entrance, first dance, parent dances, and speeches. Other packages provide the flexibility to purchase the full documentary at a later time, either before or after the wedding day. This is a great option for couples who need to manage their budget and prefer to add additional services later.
Do you offer engagement or other sessions as part of your services?
I also offer additional services as add-ons, such as Rehearsal Dinner Coverage and Love Story Film. The Love Story Film is similar to an engagement photoshoot but in a mini-movie format. It features interviews with the couple and recreates key moments from their love story. This film can be shown during the wedding reception to entertain and engage guests.
What is your most often booked package?
My most popular package is the Deluxe Collection, which includes 8 hours of coverage to capture the entire day. This package comes with a 5-6 minute highlight film and a full ceremony film with the option to add more hours of coverage and purchase the full reception events film after the wedding.
Logistics:
How many weddings do you typically capture in a year?
I would say over the past five years, I have captured an average of 30 weddings per year.
What is your availability on a client’s wedding date?
My availability depends on the number of coverage hours selected by the client.
Do you work solo, or do you work with a team?
I typically work solo, though I often have an assistant with me.
Experience and Expertise:
Can you walk us through your typical approach to capture a wedding day?
When I arrive, I first meet with the couples, as it's often our first in-person meeting. I then touch base with their wedding planner/coordinator for any updates, and the remainder of my schedule is guided by the timeline.
When you work at a new venue, how do you familiarize yourself with the new location?
When I arrive at a venue for the first time, I familiarize myself with the layout to identify key locations such as the bridal suite, ceremony site, cocktail area, and reception space. I also scout for ideal spots for the first look or first touch, as well as settings for the couple's video portrait.
Equipment and Backup Plans:
What type of equipment do you use, and do you have backup gear available?
I utilize high-quality video cameras, self-recording microphones for the couple, recording devices to connect to the DJ's sound system, stabilizing gear for steady shots, drones for aerial footage, lighting for low-light situations, and lens filters for creative shots.
I use high-quality video cameras equipped with dual-recording capabilities, meaning two memory cards simultaneously record: one as the primary and the other as a backup. Once back at my studio, I promptly upload all files to multiple storage locations for added peace of mind.
What contingency plans do you have in case of unforeseen circumstances?
In case of an emergency, I have a network of other videographers who can film in my place. If I am unable to secure a replacement, the couple is entitled to receive a full refund.
Client Interaction:
How do you ensure that you capture the moments and details that are important to the client (individually and as a couple)?
Approximately two months before their wedding day, my couples receive a Wedding Video Plan questionnaire. They use this form to inform me about their priorities and what they want captured on their big day. I carefully review their responses and incorporate them into the wedding video timeline.
Are you open to specific shot requests or ideas that client’s bring to you?
Yes!
Post-Production and Delivery:
How long does it typically take for you to deliver the final edited products?
My couples can expect to receive their wedding memories within 8 weeks from their wedding day.
What is your editing process like, and does the client have input in the final selection?
I keep my couples updated during the editing stage of their wedding video and send them the wedding film for review before it is posted online. During our video call meeting, I also ask couples to specify any genres of music they don't want for their wedding film. Lastly, as long as their requests don't change the flow or my style, I am generally open to accommodating them.
Note: packages are subject to change at anytime.
References and Reviews:
Can you provide references from past clients?
Tighist and Wesley
Lyric and Cory
Stacey and Matthew
Do you have online reviews or testimonials we can read?
Contract and Payments:
What are your payment terms and cancellation policies?
The client may cancel in cases beyond their control, such as the death of one of the partners. More details are outlined in the contract.
Do you require a deposit, and when is the final payment due?
I require a 25% down payment to secure my services, followed by a three-installment payment plan with customizable dates for each payment. The final payment is due 30 days prior to the wedding day. However, please note that this term may change at any time.

In summary, choosing a wedding cinematographer goes beyond simply picking someone with a fancy camera for a really nice drone; it involves selecting someone who can skillfully craft moments into a lasting story. It's crucial to find a skilled professional, like Henry, who comprehends the importance of the event and possesses the technical expertise to create an outstanding film, and someone who really grasps and understands your vision and desires. As a professional wedding planner, and a mom who tries to give her clients the best heart as if they are my own kids, my heart’s desire is to assist couples in making this big decision, guaranteeing that their special day is captured beautifully for future generations to cherish and enjoy.
